Bitcoin Is 0.18% From the Best September in Its Record — the Fourth Green One in a Row and 12.6% of the Perp Book Gone
Bitcoin sits at $84,229 with six sessions left in September — 0.18% from the best September in the record, while perp open interest is 12.6% below its peak.

Bitcoin is trading at $84,229 on Thursday, September 24 — up 7.19% for the month and 0.18% away from the strongest September in the entire Binance-era record. Six sessions are left to decide it. August closed at $78,581.29, which puts the number that matters at $84,382.35: close September above that and this becomes the best September Bitcoin has ever printed on the exchange's monthly chart.
That is not a rounding error. The best September on the record is 2024's +7.38%, and the 2026 candle is +7.19% with six days of trading still ahead of it. A single quiet week separates the month from a line that has stood for nine years.

The September Curse Is Dead, and This Is the Fourth Year of That
For six straight years, September was the month that took money away. Bitcoin closed red every September from 2017 to 2022: -7.33% in 2017, -5.49% in 2018, -13.54% in 2019, -7.49% in 2020, -6.96% in 2021 and -3.13% in 2022 — an average loss of 7.3% for the month, with 2019 the worst of the run.
The pattern inverted three years ago. September 2023 closed +3.94%, September 2024 +7.38% and September 2025 +5.36%. If the current month closes where it stands today, it will be the fourth consecutive green September on the record — something Bitcoin has never done, because before 2023 it had never done it twice.

The month is also carrying a quarter. Bitcoin closed June 30 at $58,624.71 and is up 43.67% since, the biggest third quarter on the monthly record ahead of Q3 2021's +25.05% and Q3 2020's +17.93%. September itself has traded between $74,967.97 on the 15th and $87,395.67 on the 21st — a 16.58% range that the last three sessions have spent compressing rather than extending.
The Two Weeks That Built the Month
This move started from a sweep, not from a signal. On September 15 Bitcoin printed its monthly low at $74,967.97 and reversed. September 18 opened at $76,417.01 and closed at $80,883.87 for a +5.85% session on 23,908 BTC, clearing the $79,600-$80,000 ceiling that had capped the first half of the month.
September 21 was the heaviest print of the month: an $81,178.01 open, a $87,395.67 high and an $86,620.00 close — +6.70% on 31,963 BTC, the largest daily volume since the August breakout. That left a two-session double touch at the top, because September 23 rejected from $87,278.54 — 117 dollars under the 21st's high — and traded a 4.38% range down to $83,500.01 before closing at $84,397.60.
Thursday was the quiet one: a $82,874.93-$84,622.01 inside bar closing at $84,229.03 on 10,898 BTC, which is 34% of the September 21 volume. That is a market coiling under its own high rather than distributing below it. The structure piece this site published on September 23 already mapped what the $87,396 double touch decides, with 90,776 and 82,648 as the measured-move outcomes on either side of it.
Momentum is stretched but not extended the way it was in August. Daily RSI sits at 70.6, with the 20-day average at $79,759 — 5.6% under spot — the 50-day at $74,950 (12.4% under) and the 200-day at $70,886 (18.8% under). Average true range is $2,518, or 2.99% of spot, which is enough room for a 3% day without breaking anything structural.
The Leverage Check: Open Interest Fell While Price Rose
Here is the part that separates this month from a leverage chase. Binance's BTC perpetual open interest was 98,503 BTC, or $8.31 billion, on September 24 — down from 106,592 BTC ($8.37 billion) on August 26. That is a 7.59% contraction in coin terms and a 0.70% decline in dollar terms, across a window in which spot rose 6.59%.
The book peaked at 112,718 BTC on September 4 and at $9.45 billion of notional on September 22. Both are behind us: open interest is 12.61% below the September 4 coin peak and 12.11% below the dollar peak, while price is 3.62% below its September high.
Open interest is 12.61% below its September 4 peak while price sits 3.62% below its September high — the last 6.59% of upside was bought in spot, not on margin.
Funding says the same thing. At the September 24 snapshot BTC perpetual funding was +0.00147% per eight hours — roughly a 1.6% annualized long-side carry, the cheapest of the majors. ETH sat at +0.00771% (about 8.5% annualized), SOL +0.00716% (~7.8%), LTC +0.0100% (~11.0%), ZEC +0.0083% (~9.1%) and DOGE +0.0052%, while XRP was the only one of those majors paying shorts, at -0.00036%. Across all 861 USDT-margined perpetuals on the exchange, only 49 carried negative funding and the median contract sat at +0.005%. Mild, not euphoric.
Context matters here. On September 20 this site reported funding rates at a 30-day high while $238 million of shorts were squeezed out. The squeeze is done, the funding premium has decayed back toward zero, and price has kept climbing without the perp book adding a single coin of new leverage.
September's Winners Were Everywhere Except Bitcoin
Rotation was the real story of the month. Measured from the August 31 close: Zcash +78.58%, Litecoin +48.28%, Celestia +43.59%, Avalanche +42.14%, Polkadot +38.45%, Sui +37.50%, Hedera +26.86%, Cardano +23.00%, Stellar +15.45% and Dogecoin +13.98%.
Bitcoin's +7.19% and Ethereum's +8.08% are at the bottom of that list — the two largest assets underperformed their own market for the first sustained stretch of this quarter. Every one of those assets also finished mid-air: the distance from each September high runs from 0.15% for LTC and 3.62% for BTC to 12.87% for AVAX, with Zcash still 9.84% below its $1,679.83 September peak. The breadth piece this site published on September 22 counted 87 of the top 100 coins green, with the median one beating Bitcoin by four points. A week later the same shape simply carried further.
The macro map is a market well under its own ceiling. Coinpaprika puts total crypto market capitalization at $2.997 trillion with $188.3 billion of 24-hour volume and Bitcoin dominance at 56.42%, against a record $4.8236 trillion set on October 5, 2025 — 37.9% below the all-time mark, with more than half of the value in a single asset.
What October Usually Does — and the Four Levels That Decide It
October is the month this dataset likes most. Of the nine Octobers on the monthly record, seven closed green, with a median return of +11.0% and a mean of +18.1%. The two exceptions are 2018 (-3.84%) and last year (-3.89%) — and the 2025 red print is the useful warning, because it followed the record market-cap top on October 5.
After a green September specifically, October has gone +47.61% (2017), +28.47% (2023), +11.00% (2024) and -3.89% (2025). Four samples, one failure, a mean of +20.8%. That is a small base rate and it should be treated as one — but October has been green far more often than red for a decade, and the single failure came in a month that opened at an all-time high in total market capitalization.
Four levels carry the next six sessions. $84,382.35 is the September close that makes this the best September on record. $78,581.29 is the August close, and everything above it keeps the four-in-a-row streak alive. $74,967.97 is the September 15 low and the invalidation of the entire monthly advance. $70,886 is the 200-day average, the line that has not been touched since August.
There is also the paperwork of a quarter-end. The September 25 options expiry is tomorrow, and this site sized that wall at $16 billion with max pain 5.2% under spot when it looked at it on September 16. A quarter that closes +43.67% also forces the kind of rebalancing flow that has nothing to do with the chart.
None of that is a forecast. What the tape shows on September 24 is a month about to close green for a fourth straight year, 0.18% from the best September on record, on a perp book that got 12.6% lighter while price climbed — and a market where every one of the top 16 names sits between 0.15% and 12.87% below its own September high.
