Why halvings matter
A halving is the moment a proof-of-work cryptocurrency cuts the block subsidy for miners in half. It is hard-coded into the protocol — for Bitcoin every 210,000 blocks, which is roughly every four years. Because the supply of new coins slows, halvings have historically been followed by significant price movements, making the countdown one of the most watched events in crypto.
Every countdown on this page is derived from the live network block height, so it is always accurate to the current chain state — not a calendar estimate. As the network mines blocks faster or slower than average, the estimated date adjusts automatically.
