Monero Closed Above $600 Four Times in October — Only Ten Sessions in Two Years Have, and $615.74 Decides $656.74 or $569.87

Monero closed above $600 four times in October and is holding it again at $613.41, parked on the 0.236 at $615.74. That line decides $656.74 or $569.87 next.

A copper physical bitcoin coin on a dark background — Monero's $600 reclaim and the $615.74 retrace level

Monero has now closed above $600 four times in October — on the 19th, 21st, 22nd and 24th — and on Sunday it is holding the level again at $613.41. To put that in perspective, only ten completed daily sessions in the 721 that Kraken has printed since early November 2024 have closed above $600: six of them in January and four this month. Sunday is trading above it again, and the other 711 sessions did not.

That is the whole setup in one line. XMR has spent most of 2026 below a January high of $799.89, which had turned into a 39.6% drawdown to $483.00 by 9 October, and the repair has been violent: 36.0% in thirteen sessions to a $656.74 print on 22 October, the highest price since the January top. Friday's flush to $575.94 and Saturday's reclaim to $615.43 happened inside 48 hours. This is not a quiet chart.

The October leg: 483.00 to 656.74, on 2.6x volume

The leg started at the 9 October low of $483.00 and finished at 22 October's high of $656.74, a 173.74-point move worth 36.0%. Volume did the confirming: 22 October traded 17,549 XMR on Kraken, 2.60x the 30-day median of 6,754, after 21 October's 15,614 (2.31x). The 22 October candle then gave back 56.56 points to close at $600.18, which matters — a high on that kind of volume that does not hold is supply, not accumulation.

The next session answered it. Friday 23 October flushed to $575.94 and closed at $583.14, and Saturday reversed to $615.43 from a $562.34 low. Year to date XMR is up 41.5% from the 1 January open of $433.41, and it is still 30.4% below the $799.89 record.

$615.74 is the 0.236, and the tape is sitting on it

Retrace the whole October leg — $483.00 low to $656.74 high, 173.74 points — and the first fib level lands at $615.74. Sunday's price is $613.41, which is 2.33 points under it, and Saturday's close of $615.43 was 0.31 under it. When price parks on a level that precisely, the level becomes the trade.

Above $615.74 the path of least resistance is a retest of $656.74, with the September high of $633.90 as the gate in between. A clean break of $656.74 puts the January record back in play — it sits 21.8% higher, and the measured move of the October leg projects to $830.48, which is above the record and therefore not a target you can trade against resistance.

Below it, the ladder is dense: $590.37 is the 0.382, $569.87 is the 0.5, and $562.34 is Saturday's low. A daily close under $562.34 would break the structure of the reclaim and put $483.00 back on the map as the reference floor. The invalidation is not $600 — it is $562.

The fuel: $300 million of open interest

None of that move happened on spot alone. CoinDesk reported on 21 October that monero futures open interest pushed past $300 million, approaching January's peak of roughly $320 million, per SoSoValue. In coin terms open interest hit a five-week high of 515,730 XMR, up sharply from about 400,000 a week earlier.

The analogue is uncomfortable and worth naming: open interest near $320 million in January preceded a 66% slide from about $790 to below $300 in twenty days as longs were forced out. The same leverage that made a 36% October leg possible turns $615.74 and $590.37 into liquidation lines rather than chart lines. A trader's read of this market has to include both facts, not one.

Kraken dropped the questionnaires, kept the $1,500 cap

Exchange-side friction is the other half of the Monero story, and this weekend it moved in the coin's favour — partially. On 24 October Kraken co-CEO Arjun Sethi said customers who bought and withdrew XMR had received emails asking about employers, sources of funds and intended use, that no regulation required those questions, and that recipients no longer have to answer them. CryptoSlate has the full exchange.

“Where your money came from is a fair question. What you do with it after it leaves is not.”

What did not change is the plumbing. Kraken's published funding policy caps individual XMR deposits at $3,500 and withdrawals at $1,500 per rolling 30 days since 15 August 2026, with corporate accounts at $30,000 and $10,000. The EEA delisting from October 2024 stands. For a coin whose entire pitch is taking custody of your own money, a $1,500 monthly exit is a hard ceiling on how fast exchange demand can convert into self-custody supply — and that is a structural lid on how far a spot rally can compound.

FCMP++ is a 2027 story, not this month's

The fundamental catalyst everyone quotes is still in test. FCMP++ — full-chain membership proofs replaces the 15 decoys in a ring signature with a proof that a spend belongs to every output on the chain, moving the anonymity set from 16 to more than 150 million outputs, and Carrot ships alongside it.

Where it actually stands: the beta stressnet v3.0 hard forked on 5 October 2026 at block 3,102,800 with RandomX v2 support, hot-cold wallet support and transaction relay v2. Mainnet is still on protocol v16 — the network has not forked since August 2022 — and the latest mainnet release is 0.18.5.4, a bug-fix build from 16 October. No official fork date has been announced; the only public timeline is a developer working draft that is explicitly non-binding, pointing at early 2027. A September readiness review tracked 42 wallet and tool projects, with none ready.

So the upgrade is a reason to hold a position through 2027, not a reason to buy this week's candle. Anyone pricing FCMP++ into a $656.74 breakout is pricing a catalyst that has not been scheduled.

What to watch into the monthly close

Four things decide where this goes. First, whether the last week of October holds $615.74 — a monthly close above $600 would be the first since January. Second, whether open interest keeps building in coin terms above 515,730 XMR, because that is the difference between fresh positioning and a squeeze. Third, whether $562.34 survives any flush, since that is the line that flips the reclaim. Fourth, whether any fork-enabled Monero release appears on the download page, because that is the one headline that would reprice the 2027 story early.

For now the market has a clean, two-sided level: $615.74 decides whether Monero retests $656.74 or gives back the 0.382 at $590.37 on the way to $569.87. Everything else this week is noise around those lines.
