Ronin's Karst Upgrade Goes Live Today: Ethereum's Fusaka Lands on the Axie Gaming Chain — and 0.0637 Decides 0.0718 or 0.0605

Ronin's Karst upgrade goes live today at 16:00 UTC, bringing Ethereum's Fusaka execution layer to the Axie gaming L2 — and 0.0637 is the line deciding 0.0718.

Ronin's Karst upgrade activates on mainnet today, October 7, at 16:00:01 UTC. Ronin is the gaming-focused Ethereum layer 2 that grew out of Axie Infinity, and Karst is the most consequential piece of plumbing the network has installed since it stopped being an Ethereum sidechain and became a full L2.

For anyone holding RON, the switch is deliberately boring: there is no new token, no redenomination, no migration transaction and no planned downtime. Ronin says ordinary users will not have to do anything at all. The work sits with builders and node operators — and the deadline is hard.

Karst Goes Live at 16:00 UTC — Nodes That Miss It Stop Following the Chain

Karst imports Ethereum's Fusaka execution-layer improvements into Ronin and adds an L2 Contract Manager, a system that lets Ronin upgrade its core contracts inside a single block. Previously those upgrades depended on Ethereum multisig transactions or client-level changes, which meant multi-step migrations that left the network in a mixed state for days.

The second half is a standardisation play: Ronin is moving its L1 contracts to op-contracts v7.0.0, the newest Optimism stack, so its bridge and rollup mechanics line up with the wider OP Stack ecosystem instead of drifting on a fork of their own. The full breakdown lives in Ronin's Karst announcement.

Node operators are the ones with a countdown. Ronin is asking them to run op-reth v2.2.3, and any node still on the unsupported op-geth client has to migrate. An un-upgraded node does not simply lag behind — it stops following the chain entirely.

Nodes that aren't upgraded before Karst activates will stop following the chain.

Karst has been running on the Saigon testnet since September 2 — five weeks of public rehearsal — which is why the operational risk on activation day is mostly about stragglers rather than the code itself.

What Actually Changes for Builders: Gas Caps and Cryptography

Three changes are worth a builder's attention before the fork lands. The first is a per-transaction gas limit of roughly 16.8 million gas. Ordinary transactions sit far below it — Ronin cites a typical DEX swap at around 10,000 gas — but heavy multicalls and large contract deployments will feel it. Ethereum deposit transactions are exempt from the cap.

The second is repricing of cryptographic precompiles. P256VERIFY becomes roughly twice as expensive, which matters for passkey and WebAuthn-style authentication. MODEXP also gets more expensive and picks up a 1,024-byte input limit, while bn256Pairing drops to 300 pairs per call from 427 — relevant for zero-knowledge proof verification and BLS signature aggregation.

The third is the addition of the CLZ opcode, a small piece of the Fusaka package that Ronin inherits by following Ethereum's execution-layer standard rather than maintaining a divergent client.

The Second Catalyst on the Calendar: Ronin's First Governance Vote

Karst is not the only thing happening on Ronin in October. The network's first governance framework is opening, and it hands RON holders a direct vote on economic and treasury decisions for the first time: one RON equals one vote, with a 66% supermajority required to pass anything. Protocol and security-critical decisions stay with validators for now.

The first proposal, RGP-1, would deploy treasury assets as liquidity for RON/WETH and RON/USDC on the Katana DEX. If it passes, Ronin's own order books get deeper, slippage shrinks and the treasury earns trading fees from the liquidity rather than leaving idle reserves parked. That is a structural improvement to how RON trades on its own chain, and the process is set to begin this month — details in Ronin Governance.

It comes with a supply-side footnote that is easy to miss. The ecosystem team is transferring a first tranche of 16,234,252 RON into the treasury in October, combining the April, July and October tranches and subtracting the roughly 2,456,748 RON already paid out in Proof of Distribution rewards. In total, 85,234,252 RON of former staking rewards are flowing back to the treasury on a quarterly schedule that tapers until January 2031 — assets the governance framework now puts in holders' hands to allocate.

The Level Map: 0.0637 Is the Line That Decides 0.0718 or 0.0605

RON has spent October grinding higher off a July all-time low. Gate's RON/USDT pair last changed hands at $0.06433, down 3.45% on the day, inside a 24-hour range of $0.06422 to $0.06968. CoinGecko put the price at $0.06472 with a market cap near $50.0 million, a fully diluted valuation of $64.7 million and a rank around 485 — up 18.6% over 30 days and 2.0% over seven, still 86.9% below where it traded a year ago. The all-time high of $4.45 dates to March 2024; the all-time low of $0.04546 to July 29 this year, which means RON is up roughly 41% from its worst print.

The structure is cleaner than the percentages suggest. RON printed its October high at $0.07180 on October 2, topped $0.06995 on September 25 and has spent the last five sessions holding a shelf just above $0.0637, which is where the 20-day moving average sits. The 50-day average is far below at $0.05745, and a 14-day ATR of $0.00511 means this thing still moves nearly 8% in an average day — daily RSI is a healthy 62, not stretched.

That gives a two-sided map with one pivot. The bull path needs RON to defend $0.0637 into the activation and then reclaim $0.06995, which reopens the $0.07180 October high and the measured extension above it. The bear path is a daily close under $0.0637, which flips the 20-day average into resistance and opens $0.0605 — the September 28 shelf — and then the 50-day average at $0.05745. A volatility event that matters enough to break $0.0718 on volume invalidates the bear case; a failed activation that drags RON under $0.0605 invalidates the bull case.

One honest number to keep in frame: Ronin's total value locked sits near $11.9 million according to DefiLlama, small next to the major L2s. Karst is a foundation-laying upgrade, not a volume event, and the L2 Contract Manager only pays off if more games ship on the back of it. What is measurable in the next two weeks is whether contract deployments and network activity step up after 16:00 UTC — and whether RGP-1 turns a treasury into a liquidity engine.

The calendar is unusually tight: Karst at 16:00 UTC today, the governance process opening this month, and the first treasury tranche landing in the same window. RON holders get a network upgrade and a vote in the space of three weeks — with $0.0637 as the line that sorts the two outcomes.
