Plasma Gave Back the Whole Stripe Card Rally in Two Sessions — the $0.07488 Wick Is Now the Line That Decides

XPL ran 10.1% intraday on Stripe's multi-currency stablecoin cards, then handed all of it back. Plasma's $555M chain TVL is real — and $0.07488 is now the line.

Two sessions was all it took. XPL closed at $0.08579 on 15 October — its strongest day since early in the month — on the news that Stripe had picked Plasma as a design partner for multi-currency stablecoin payment cards. By 04:35 UTC on 18 October the token was $0.07859, below where it traded before the announcement, and the 15 October low of $0.07488 was the only line left between the rally and a full round trip.

What Stripe and Plasma Actually Announced

On 15 October Stripe and Plasma said they will co-develop multi-currency stablecoin-backed payment cards, with Plasma acting as design partner inside Stripe's card-issuing infrastructure. The cards let a holder spend directly from the currency balance they already hold instead of converting everything into a single currency at checkout — USD, EUR, BRL, MXN and COP in Ambcrypto's account, with Cryptobriefing listing GBP in place of PEN. Settlement assets include USDC and OUSD, the Open USD stablecoin built for the GENIUS compliance regime.

The reach is the point. Stripe's stablecoin card programme already operates in more than 30 countries with a stated target of over 100 markets in 2027, and Stripe's stablecoin card spending was running at roughly $1.2 billion a month in 2026, per Cryptobriefing. For Plasma, the deal puts its rails inside an issuing network instead of beside one — a different kind of distribution than another exchange listing.

The Setup Was Already There

The announcement did not land on an empty product. Plasma One, the stablecoin-native neobank launched publicly in June 2026, ships three tiers of Visa-linked cards with cashback paid in XPL, spending from either self-custodied balances or account balances, yields of up to 6%, and fee-free USDT transfers on the Plasma network. Five days before Stripe, BVNK added native Plasma support with zero network fees, and Deel was already using that route to pay contractors worldwide.

The chain holds $555.3 million in TVL, per DeFiLlama — about 1.56x XPL's $356 million market cap at the current price. That gap deserves care: most of it is bridged stablecoin deposits rather than XPL capital, so it is not a valuation floor. But it does mean real balances sit on the network while the token trades at rank 130.

The Rally Itself Was Thin

The 15 October candle did what headline candles usually do. It opened at $0.08036, printed $0.08845 — a 10.1% intraday move — and closed at $0.08579 on 186.2 million XPL, the heaviest session since 2 October. What came after was the problem: 16 October closed at $0.08287 on 62.4 million, then 17 October closed at $0.07876 on 42.7 million, taking out the $0.08109 and $0.07675 lows on shrinking volume.

Derivatives added fuel without follow-through. CoinGlass data cited by Ambcrypto showed derivatives volume up 99.79% to $250.73 million and open interest up 17.62% to $213.62 million on the move, with a 24-hour long/short ratio of 1.0807 and longs accounting for roughly 75% of $292.74 thousand in liquidations. That is a positioning pop, not accumulation — and when the spot buying stopped, the same leverage unwound into the two red sessions that followed.

The Two Lines That Decide It

Downside is the 15 October wick at $0.07488 — the level buyers defended on the news day itself, 4.8% under the current $0.07859 and 2.4% under the 17 October low. Lose it on a daily close and the announcement candle is fully retraced, which reopens the $0.06015 all-time low printed during the token's post-launch slide. Upside is $0.08845 to $0.08996 — the pop high, then the resistance Ambcrypto flagged. Clearing that shelf opens $0.09835 to $0.10356, the range that capped XPL in the last week of September.

Context for both directions: XPL is 95.3% below its $1.68 all-time high, down 8.7% on the week and 18% on the fortnight, with 4.53 billion of a 10 billion supply circulating. Momentum is not on the bull side. The 1.56x TVL-to-market-cap ratio is.

What Would Make the Card Deal Real

A token does not reprice on a partnership logo forever. The next hard data points are product-side: how many of those 100-plus markets actually go live in 2027, whether automatic currency selection ships, and whether card volume converts into demand for XPL specifically — cashback is paid in it and gas on Plasma is paid in it. Watch Plasma chain TVL and card spend through the two quarters after rollout. If TVL climbs while the price stalls, the deal is being used and the token is lagging. If both stall, 15 October was a press release with a chart attached.

For now the market has voted once: +10.1% intraday on the news, -11.1% from that high two sessions later. Whether that was a failed pop or a pause hangs on $0.07488.
