Dogecoin Just Got Its First Smart-Contract Layer: DogeOS Testnet Is Live and DOGE Pays Every Fee
Dogecoin's first EVM layer opened its public testnet on Sept 30: 300 TPS, no new token, and DOGE pays the gas for every app. Here is what $0.0976 decides.

Dogecoin ran for eleven years as a payments chain with no smart contracts. On September 30 that changed. DogeOS, the application layer built by the team behind the MyDoge wallet, opened its public testnet called Chikyu, and for the first time developers can deploy Solidity contracts that settle back to Dogecoin using DOGE to pay for every transaction.
It is a zero-knowledge rollup, or ZK-EVM: the heavy computation happens one layer above Dogecoin, while proofs tie the activity back to the base chain. Dogecoin itself processes roughly 30 transactions per second and was never designed to run applications. DogeOS targets around 300 TPS on the new layer, which is the difference between a chain that only moves coins and one that can host lending markets, perps and games.

No New Token and No Airdrop — DOGE Pays Every Fee
The decision that matters most for holders is what DogeOS did not do. There is no second token, no points program and no farm to chase: DOGE is the sole native gas asset, used both for fees and for deploying contracts. Every application that launches on the layer inherits Dogecoin's existing holder base instead of asking for a new one.
Developers get the tooling they already know. The testnet ships with a bridge, a faucet that dispenses test DOGE, and an L2Scan explorer, and it works with Hardhat, Foundry, EthersJS and Remix. DogeOS raised a 6.9 million dollar seed round led by Polychain Capital and ran a private testnet before opening the doors to everyone.

Six Applications Are Already Running on It
The public testnet did not launch empty. Pilot applications are live across DeFi and gaming: Barkswap for liquidity, Superposition Finance for lending, Derps for perpetual futures, USDoge as an algorithmic stablecoin, plus Doge Escape and Doxx Arcade on the gaming side. The mix is deliberate — it shows the layer can carry the same categories that made Ethereum and Solana ecosystems sticky.
My hopes are that DogeOS becomes the spring-board for a wave of new utility engineering, the gateway for the next 100 startups to build on Dogecoin. The utility of a smart-contract system, anchored to the simplicity of the Dogecoin network. — Timothy Stebbing, Director of the Dogecoin Foundation
The $0.0976 Gate, Read Off the Real Candles
The chart has been coiling since September 23 and the levels are unusually clean. On the real Binance daily, DOGE opened September 21 at 0.0873 and closed at 0.09986 on 2.74 billion DOGE, the heaviest print of the last 90 sessions. The next day it tagged a 90-day high of 0.10589 on another 2.25 billion tokens.
Then it gave the move back. September 23 printed a low of 0.09113 and closed at 0.09273, and in the two weeks since, no daily candle has closed above 0.10. The upside attempts were capped at 0.09984 on September 25, 0.09796 on October 2 and 0.0976 on October 4. Spot sits at 0.0954 with a 14.9 billion dollar market cap and rank 12, up 3.8% over 30 days.
That makes the ladder simple to read: reclaim 0.0976 and the two pushes at 0.09984 and 0.10211 come back into play, with 0.10589 as the 90-day ceiling to break. Lose 0.09252 and the October 2 low at 0.09031 opens the door to the September 21 base near 0.0873, with the deeper shelf at 0.0848.
What Has to Land Before This Becomes Real
There is no mainnet date yet. The team says the timeline will be published once the next development milestones are hit, and the current testnet depends on validator signatures, a trusted execution environment and a permissioned sequencer. A proposed Dogecoin Core change submitted in July 2025 would let miners verify ZK proofs natively, but it has not been implemented — so today this is a test network, not production infrastructure.
The institutional backdrop is already in place, which is what makes the experiment worth watching. Four spot DOGE ETFs trade in the US: REX-Osprey DOJE, Grayscale GDOG and Bitwise BWOW launched between September and November of last year, and 21Shares TDOG arrived on Nasdaq in January with the first direct SEC approval for a spot Dogecoin product, a 0.50% fee and an endorsement from the Dogecoin Foundation through House of Doge.
DOGE is still 87% below its all-time high of 0.7316, and the token has spent this year earning its classification as a digital commodity rather than a meme trade. What changed on September 30 is that Dogecoin now has a place for applications to live.
