Bitcoin Is Up 44.5% in Q3 With Five Days Left — Its Best Quarter Since 2024, and October Has Been Green 7 of the Last 9 Years
Bitcoin is up 44.5% in Q3 with five days left and Ethereum is up 71.2%, the best quarter for ETH since 2021. Here is what October and Q4 have actually done.

The third quarter closes on Wednesday, and crypto's two largest assets are ending it at levels that looked nothing like the July setup. Bitcoin opened Q3 at $58,624.71 and is trading at $84,686 as of 02:50 UTC on September 25 — a 44.5% quarterly gain. Ethereum opened the same quarter at $1,572.00 and sits at $2,692, up 71.2%. Both numbers are visible on the monthly candles: Bitcoin printed a Q3 low of $57,800.19 on July 1 and a Q3 high of $87,395.67 on September 21, while Ethereum ran from $1,552.92 to $2,807.34 inside the same three months.
The Best Quarter Since 2024, and Since 2021 for Ethereum
For Bitcoin this is the strongest quarter since Q4 2024, when it gained 47.8%. It is also the first green quarter after three consecutive red ones: Q4 2025 closed down 23.1%, Q1 2026 down 22.1% and Q2 2026 down 14.1%. The 2026 Q3 candle is the one that broke that sequence, and it did it with the quarter's low printed on the very first day.

Ethereum's 71.2% is a bigger move than Bitcoin's in both absolute and percentage terms, and it is the largest quarterly gain for ETH since Q1 2021, when it rose 160.6%. The rally was not straight up: July traded between $1,552.92 and $1,981.24, August extended to $2,566.53, and September added another 9.1% on top of that with a $2,807.34 high three days ago.
The wider market moved with them. Total crypto market capitalisation sits at $3.025 trillion with $168.5 billion traded in the last 24 hours, and Bitcoin dominance is 56.31%, according to Coinpaprika's live market data — a dominance figure that has barely moved through a quarter in which both majors gained more than 40%.

September Did the Heavy Lifting
September is historically Bitcoin's weakest calendar month — over the same nine years of data used below it averages -1.9% and closes green less than half the time. This September is running at +7.8%, from a $78,581.30 monthly open to $84,686 now.
The move came in a single week. Bitcoin spent the first half of the month boxed under $82,300, then broke through on September 21 and printed $87,395.67 — its highest level of the quarter — on a day that closed 7.5% higher. Ethereum did the same thing to $2,807.34 that session. What followed was a controlled give-back rather than a reversal: Bitcoin set lows at $83,500.01 on September 23 and $82,874.93 on September 24, and both times bought back. Ethereum swept $2,600.15 on September 24 and closed the day at $2,688.
Over the last seven days Bitcoin is up 4.7% and Ethereum 3.0%; over thirty days the two are almost tied at +7.2% and +7.4%. The quarter's gains were made in July and September, with August as the bridge.
What October Has Actually Delivered
This is the part that gets quoted every year, so here is the raw record instead of a rumour. Bitcoin's October returns on exchange data going back to 2017: +47.6%, -3.8%, +10.3%, +28.0%, +39.9%, +5.5%, +28.5%, +11.0% and -3.9%. That is seven green Octobers out of nine, an average of +18.1% and a median of +11.0% — the strongest calendar month in the decade of data.
Seven green Octobers in nine years, an average gain of 18.1% and a median of 11.0% — no other calendar month on Bitcoin's record comes close to that base rate.
Ethereum's October record is far weaker: five green years out of nine, an average of +5.9% and a median of +0.7%, with back-to-back losses in 2024 (-3.2%) and 2025 (-7.2%). Looking at the full fourth quarter rather than the month, Bitcoin's last five Q4s were +5.5%, -14.8%, +56.8%, +47.8% and -23.1%, while Ethereum's were +22.5%, -10.0%, +36.6%, +28.3% and -28.3%.
The honest way to use those numbers is as a base rate, not a forecast. Two of the last nine Octobers were red, the most recent one included, and the same dataset that says October is Bitcoin's best month is the one that says September is its worst — a month that just delivered +7.8%. Seasonality tells you what the distribution has looked like, not what the next four weeks will do.
The Levels That Carry Into Q4
Bitcoin's structure into the quarter-end: resistance at the $87,395.67 September high, then the $90,000 round number the market has not touched since this cycle's peak zone. Support sits at $83,500 and $82,874.93, the two lows from this week, with the daily averages stacked underneath at $80,011 (20-day), $75,361 (50-day) and $70,968 (200-day) — all of them below spot, which is the signature of a quarter that trended up.
Ethereum's levels: resistance at $2,807.34 and then the psychological $3,000 that ETH has not traded above since the 2025 bear market began. Support at the $2,600 shelf it just defended. Its averages matter more here than Bitcoin's do — the 20-day at $2,558.98 and the 50-day at $2,357.58 are both rising, and the 200-day at $2,095.37 is a long way below price.
Two dates are left on the calendar. The quarter closes on Wednesday, September 30, which is also the last trading day of the month — a session that decides how both the September and Q3 candles print. Q4 opens the day after with the same book and the same structure, and with the seasonality table above finally in play. For anyone tracking this market, the useful thing to watch is not the average gain, but whether $83,500 holds on Bitcoin and $2,600 holds on Ethereum into that close.
