Bitcoin's September Curse Is Dead: a Fourth Straight Green Month — and the $87,395 Wall October Has to Clear

A physical gold Bitcoin coin on a dark surface — Bitcoin's fourth straight green September and the $87,395 level October has to clear

Bitcoin is trading near $83,200 on September 29 with one session left in the month, up 5.9% from the $78,581.30 open it printed on September 1. Unless the last day of the month delivers something dramatic, September 2026 will close green for the fourth year in a row — the longest such streak in the asset's history on Binance's monthly candles. The month's high of $87,395.67 and its low of $74,967.97 got the same headline treatment, but the structure in between is what October has to price.

The September Curse Broke in 2023 and Never Came Back

For six straight years, September was where Bitcoin went to bleed. On Binance's monthly data, September closed lower in 2017 (−6.64%), 2018 (−5.49%), 2019 (−13.55%), 2020 (−7.49%), 2021 (−6.96%) and 2022 (−3.12%) — an average loss of 7.2% and, for a long stretch, the single worst calendar month in crypto.

That pattern died in 2023. September finished +3.94% that year, +7.38% in 2024, +5.36% in 2025 and is +5.91% so far in 2026. Four consecutive green Septembers, in a month that once carried a six-year losing streak, is the kind of regime change that shows up in seasonal tables long before it shows up in price targets.

What September 2026 Actually Looked Like

The month opened weak. Bitcoin slid from $78,581 to a $74,967.97 low on September 15 — down 3.25% on the session — one day before the Federal Reserve raised its target range by a quarter point to 3.75%–4.00%, its first increase since 2023 and a unanimous 12–0 vote (CNBC).

The reaction was the opposite of what the macro script suggested. September 18 added 5.85%, September 21 added 6.70% and printed the month's high at $87,395.67 on 31,963 BTC of volume — the heaviest session of the month and roughly double the September average. That squeeze wiped out a large block of short positions: CF Benchmarks measured $647.9 million of crypto short liquidations over the 24 hours into that Monday, with other tallies recording about $262 million inside a single hour.

The second attempt failed two days later. September 23 tagged $87,278.54 before closing at $84,397.60, leaving a double top across $87,278–87,396. Since then Bitcoin has spent six sessions boxed between $83,183 and $85,255, with a $82,563 wick on September 28. A month that gained almost 6% did most of it in two days and has been digesting since.

$2.4 Billion in One Week: The Flows Behind the Green Month

The bid underneath that move was not retail. U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs took in $2.4 billion in the week ending September 25 — their largest weekly haul since the week that ended October 10, 2025 — and enough to flip 2026 net flows from roughly $5.8 billion in the red in mid-July to about $934 million positive on SoSoValue data reported by The Block.

The shape of that week matters as much as the total. Daily inflows ran $999 million on September 21, then $714.7 million, $346.9 million, $190.7 million and $134.5 million by Friday (24/7 Wall St). The streak only started after September 15–16, when $450.4 million and $295.9 million left the funds as the CLARITY Act stalled in the Senate. Seven consecutive inflow sessions erased that hole.

The rest of the complex joined in. Ether funds added about $690 million over the same week after a run of outflows. Spot Solana ETF assets hit a record $1.5 billion, with Bitwise's BSOL holding roughly 71% of that, XRP funds added $75.6 million, and Grayscale's Zcash trust briefly crossed $1.0 billion in net assets.

Around 31,800 Bitcoin moved off exchanges last week, which could point to accumulation, although rising unrealised profits also indicate a higher risk of a correction. — Prateek Gupta, Head of Business at Mudrex

October's Record: Seven Green Years in Nine

October has been the friendliest month on the calendar. On Binance monthly candles it closed green in 2017 (+47.6%), 2019 (+10.3%), 2020 (+28.0%), 2021 (+39.9%), 2022 (+5.5%), 2023 (+28.5%) and 2024 (+11.0%) — seven of the last nine years, with a median gain of 11.0% and an average of 18.1%.

The two exceptions are the ones worth studying. October 2018 fell 3.8% in the middle of a post-bubble bear market, and October 2025 fell 3.9% — but only after printing a monthly high of $126,199.63, the cycle top from which the fourth quarter finished down 23.15%, the worst Q4 on record. October is the month that has historically both launched the strongest quarter of the year and marked the highs that ended cycles.

The Levels and the Calendar That Decide What Comes Next

The gate is the double top at $87,278–87,396. A weekly close above it opens the September 21 spike range and puts the $90,000 round number in play; rejections there have already produced two lower highs in eight sessions. Below the market, the shelf at $83,183–85,255 has held all month, with $82,563 the wick low, $81,178–81,400 the pre-breakout base from September 18–20, and $78,581 — the September open — the line that would turn a green month red. The month low sits at $74,967.97.

The quarter underneath all of this was the best of 2026: from their July 1 opens, Bitcoin is up 41.97%, Ether 69.92% and Solana 61.84%. September alone added 8.26% on ETH and 14.43% on SOL, both of which printed their monthly highs on September 21 — the same session Bitcoin tagged $87,395.67.

On the calendar, the next macro test is the October 27–28 FOMC meeting, with the December 8–9 meeting carrying updated projections (Federal Reserve calendar). The September statement left the target range at 3.75%–4.00% and the median dot at 4.1% for year-end, with 16 of 18 participants expecting at least one more increase this year (FOMC statement). October 1 also brings Brazil's Resolution BCB 588 into force, requiring institutions to report transfers of $10,000 or more to and from self-custody wallets to the country's financial intelligence unit by the next business day (CryptoSlate) — a reporting rule rather than a ban, but the first time a major market has put a reporting layer directly on the self-custody boundary.

What October really hinges on is whether the ETF tape re-accelerates toward the $300 million-plus daily pace of September 21–22 or keeps fading the way it did into that Friday. The $87,395 wall already has two rejections in it, and monthly seasonality is a historical average, not a forecast — the 2025 October high of $126,199.63 was set in a month that closed red.
